Video about the historical Saponi and Manahoac tribes descendants of
today.
The Collins family ancestors have been proven thru
government records as having lived in the Orange county VA area as
far back as the early 1600s. The Manahoac tribe became known as the
Saponi tribe during the early 1700s. The Collins family was listed
as Indians on Orange county Va court records being tried in VAs
court with the Saponi indians of Fort Christiana. After the 1700s
The Collins descendants was featured in Time magazine during a
article which refered to them as the Melungeons of Newmans ridge,
this magazine stated the Collins was quite full blooded looking and
had came from Virginia, the article also stated how the Collins
descendants was still living like the indians as late as 1890. Many
documentries, researchers, documentry crews, tv shows, etc have done
stories on the Collins family. In the mid to late 1900s one of the
top Cherokee researchers named Robert K Thomas did a 32 page report
on all the NC indian families, The Collins was the ONLY family in
that report which he considered Saponi indian. To this day the
Saponi/Manahoac Collins descendants are kept out of tribes using
their ancestors tribe name. Recently many people have started
finding a larger interest in these Native American Collins ancestors
story, this is one of the videos.
